Space research is heavily dependent on experimental data from
often quite expensive instrumentation. Because of this, extensive national and
international projects are needed to secure the availability of good data for the
research. The Space Research Group of Oulu has been - and is - involved in several such
projects. On the ground segment they include managing a search coil magnetometer chain
in Finland, building optical instruments for auroral studies, and taking part in the
international EISCAT project. On the satellite side the group has gained a co-Investigator
status in several projects to build space instruments. (See the links on the left hand
side for more information.) Note that group's contribution is not always hardware, since
software plays often an important part when constructing instruments. This has been
especially true in the EISCAT project.
Financially the projects are supported by Academy
of Finland (SA), Technology Development Centre
(TEKES) of Finland, Space Institute of Oulu, and University of Oulu. The group is also involved
in the work of the Thule Institute of the University
of Oulu with the project "Solar
forcing in polar near-space and atmosphere". |
