Space Research Group of OuluPOLAR project in Oulu

Introduction

NASA's POLAR project, launched 24 February 1996, targets the Earth's polar regions. The satellite is still operating, although it is past its nominal lifetime (it may last up to 2002 or 2003, but the orbit will deteriorate towards lower latitudes). Oulu is involved in building the boom mechanisms for the electric field instrument, EFI, in collaboration with the Space Sciences Laboratory of the University of Berkeley. We are also very interested in various ground-based activities in connection with the Polar spacecraft.

The POLAR orbit is 1.81 x 8.9 Re with 90 degree inclination (see the figure).
