Satellite radio tomography
in Oulu
spaceweb@oulu.fi - last update: 1 April 2010 (RR)
The Space Physics Group of Oulu has carried out satellite radio tomography measurements
with the Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory (Finland)
and Polar Geophysical Institute (Murmansk, Russia) to study the Earth's ionosphere. The
instrumentation consists of a chain of satellite receivers developed by the Polar
Geophysical Institute. The chain is positioned along, e.g., magnetic meridional plane.
During the operation, the receivers will observe phase difference of two coherent waves
from polar orbiting Russian navigational satellites. Tomographic inversion of the
data produces plots of F-region electron densities. A new sophisticated analysis package
has been developed, which calculates the electron density by means of stochastic
inversion.
