Space Research Group of OuluVIKING project in Oulu

spaceweb@oulu.fi - last update: 14 November 2000 (RR)

The first Swedish scientific satellite, VIKING, was on near polar orbit around the Earth between February 1986 - December 1986 (for more information, see Hultqvist, 1990). Although the Space Physics Group did not take part in the construction of the instruments onboard, the good connections to Alfvén Laboratory , Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan (KTH) in Stockholm, Sweden, and Max-Planck-Institut für Aeronomie (MPAe), Katlenburg- Lindau, Germany, provided the group with access to the electric field and high energy ion (MICS) data, respectively. One of the co-I's of the MICS instrument from MPAe, Dr. Gerhard Kremser, stayed in Oulu as a visiting professor for five years (1989-1994).

The Viking related science in Oulu have dealt with the electric fields around auroral arcs (e.g., Aikio et al., 1995, 1996), substorm effects (e.g., Rasinkangas et al., 1991) and EMIC waves (e.g., Mursula et al., 1997; Rasinkangas and Mursula, 1998).
